Dressing the Decisive Child
Gripping my Frappuccino tightly in my hand, I walk nervously towards my 4 year old daughter’s room anticipating the battle ahead. I stop briefly at her door, and reconsider whether I should have added drip valium to my morning regime. As the mother of two young daughters (2 and 4 years old), I have often felt overwhelmed with the struggle of dressing my girls in the morning. Before having children of my own, I had never considered that a 4 year old would be so determined about her fashion choices, nor did I ever think I’d have to spend 20 minutes explaining to her why her sparkly, purple Barbie swimsuit and flip flops are not appropriate attire for a -2 degree winter day. While, I would never trade the precious time I have
had with them, it has been a long road finding items that satisfy both of us. I have included below our top picks.
One of our favorite brands, Oilily, combines colorful European styling with comfort. The patterns are bold and eccentric and my daughter loves the quirky characters and fun ruffles. I am a huge fan of their soft cotton dresses which can easily be paired with tights or a pair of their cotton pants. Their transition pieces are great for all seasons. Although it’s pricey, you can often find incredible deals at their Outlets (located in Florida and New York) and at their once a year Warehouse sale in Illinois if you don’t mind sifting through racks next to other rabid,
latte chugging moms, like myself. Hannah modeling the Pink “Sorry” Dress from the 2005
Summer line, $78 at Oilily.
Another favorite, Indygo Artwear, is a vibrant line of clothing that is hand painted in South Africa. My daughter’s favorite part about this line is what I like to call their “twirlability.” She loves how beautifully the dresses twirl when she is dancing. Their clothes are very durable and best of all, soft and comfortable. Their cotton dresses and two piece sets run a tad large, so your child will grow into them. The colors have held up perfectly even after multiple washings.

Hanna Andersson, is one the most popular brands for moms and children because of their high-quality cotton clothing that has great potential for multi-child wear. Their basic items are a staple in our closets because they aren’t itchy and they literally last forever. I often have this image of archaeologists unearthing fossils and perfectly intact Hanna Andersson dresses from digging sites 3,000 years from now. Hanna hand me downs are very commonplace and there is a large presence on eBay to from which to choose. Our pick, Hanna’s basic cotton stripe Play dress and Capri pants.

As I am finishing up this piece, my daughter has crawled onto my lap and has announced, “I’m going to go to Medical School and then I am going to be President of the United States.” Hopefully she’ll have grown out of the Purple Barbie Swimsuit by then.
